In 2001 MERCi won two awards, and although this is not a priority it was a welcome recognition of the hard work of our staff, volunteers and friends.

Manchester Civic Society's Energy Efficiency Award

In 2001, MERCi's Bridge-5 Mill was entered into Manchester Civic Society's award for most energy efficient building. After coming second the previous year, MERCi was awarded the accolade at a dinner at the Midland Hotel.

"Despite the publicity regarding climate change, efficient use of energy is still an after-thought in many of today's buildings. This award recognises the importance of effective energy planning and conservation in a new building, or in the conversion of an existing building for residential, commercial or manufacturing use. Britain in Bloom

MERCi, in partnership with residents of Ancoats and Miles Platting, entered the area into the ' Britain in Bloom' competition in 2001. After six months of organising & running events and brightening up the area, MERCi held host to the judges in August. The result was that Ancoats and Miles Platting won the award in a new category of Urban Regeneration.

A fifty page review of the communities of Ancoats and Miles Platting entry into the North West's Britain in Bloom competition in 2001 was completed after the event which makes practical suggestions for using the competition as a vehicle for community development with contacts, case studies and recommendations.
