Herbie Fruit & Veg Vans – Volunteer

Starting-September 09/ 3-12 hours a week. The volunteer/s would be working with the Herbie team. Herbie was set up to provide affordable, fresh fruit and vegetables to residents living in areas of North & East Manchester with poor access to fresh foods.

Herbie is a mobile greengrocer, filling the gap that was created by the closure of most of the local shops in the area. Customers can walk on board and choose from a good range of affordable fresh produce. We also supply boxes of fruit to schools and projects, and work closely with sheltered housing, churches, health clinics and resident groups to ensure that we reach as many people in our local community as possible.

This is a great opportunity for a volunteer/s to work on a renowned and successful project, work with the public, helping to improve quality of life and promote sustainable communities. The volunteer/s will develop an understanding of community engagement, fresh produce retailing and have the opportunity to learn about Manchester's alternative food networks.

Main Purpose
To assist the Herbie team in promoting the service and improving access to fresh produce for local residents.

Main Tasks

  • Meeting community groups and members of the public, with the Herbie team.
  • Working on the van, leafleting, serving customers.

The post will be based at Bridge-5 Mill and New Smithfield Market in Openshaw in Manchester. Plus travelling around North & East Manchester on the vans. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.
