Ridgeway Street Community Garden is located in East Manchester in Miles Platting. It was established in spring 2001 by MERCi and is supported and maintained by members of the local community. The local church owns the land and they have given formal permission for us to exploit it in this way for the good of the local community.
It aims to create a healthy outdoor community space that can be used to promote natural gardening methods and foster communication skills and co-operation with children and young people in the community, and create a focus for the community as a whole.
Ancoats and Miles Platting are part of an area of East Manchester , which is severely impoverished for services and community activities. The community garden project offers a focal point for the community to come together as well as a resource for education and leisure. It helps improve community cohesion, as well as improve the physical environment.
MERCi has secured funding to undertake physical works in the garden to improve its appearance and make it more accessible and adaptable for all members of the community and different types of activity. This will include:
